The Bad Side of Tradition

When you think of traditions you may get a warm and fuzzy feeling. It may conjure up memories of holidays past or the annual festivities that bring your family and friends together.

While these things can be good and healthy. There is a bad side of tradition. There are things that we do, because everyone before us did them,  that make us feel that we are pleasing God. However, in reality, God is extremely displeased. These rituals and displays of pageantry have replaced what God really requires from us.

Paul said in Colossians 2:8

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

It is scary to think that we could go along believing a lie because ” it’s always been done this way.” The fact is God’s Word lets us know exactly what it takes to be saved. We don’t have to be in the dark. We must separate ourselves from what our parents or grandparents did, whether good or bad, and make sure our lives line up to His commandments. In the final judgement our traditions will not stand up unless they are consistant with the Bible.

God Bless!
